About seven years ago, my father, Doug, gave me a box of letters that he had received from his sister, Eliza. It seems that our Grandmother Jane had been storing these letters and had passed them on to Eliza. Eliza passed them on to my father, hoping that he would have time to do something with the letters, being a retiree and all. But, no, he opted, instead, to pass them on to me. I am just a teacher, after all...plenty of time to scan. So, ever so slowly, I have scanned these letters. Often the task would be set aside and then revived at a later date, usually when there would be papers to grade.
My grandmother, Elizabeth Scoggin Williams, wrote to her parents on a weekly and, sometimes, daily basis. The letters cover everything from the newest dress that she wanted when she was in college to the humorous antics of her children many years later. She was quite a prolific writer. Of course, this was before the days of email and even before there were phones in every purse or pocket. Letter writing was THE means of communication.
I have tried to think of the best way to share these letters with you all, and, although I have had many ideas, none of these have come to fruition. The time that it would take to compile these letters into a format that would be easy and accessible is not available to me. So, instead, I have decided to share the letters with you via the blogosphere. I realize that not everyone spends the same amount of time on the computer as I do, but the letters will always be here. So, when you get a rainy day, take the time to read a few letters. Feel free to comment, send suggestions, or even send any photos that you might like to see posted. Unless anyone objects, I plan on leaving this blog public. Therefore, if you know someone that would be interested in keeping up with Elizabeth's letters, feel free to share.
